Making it's very large presence felt as it stands on the Events Field at Beamish Museum is this mighty 1942-built Scammell Pioneer SV2S heavy recovery tractor, UK civilian registration VXS 948.
The tractor is carrying the US Army livery white star, although this was commonly used on all allied vehicles in the latter part of WWII. The numbering/lettering relates to the British Army. The “H” number on the bonnet is the initial letter for tractor/prime mover serial numbers. The blue/yellow/red formation sign on the offside mudguard indicates that it is a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) vehicle, and the white number “99” on the other mudguard indicates that the vehicle is assigned to a REME Armoured Brigade Workshop.
The Scammell Pioneer was produced in various forms (recovery vehicle, artillery tractor, tank transporter) between 1927 and 1945, during which time almost 3,500 units were made. The SV2S version was Introduced in 1938 and remained in production throughout WWII, with a total of almost 2,000 built by the end of the war.
