Bottlenose Dolphins at the Roatan Institute for Marine Science (RIMS) at Anthony's Key Resort in Roatan, Honduras. There are 30 animals here that are semi-captive, in that they are in large enclosures, but also go out to sea and return. The dolphins are being studied by Dr. Stan Kuczaj, a cognitive and animal behavior biologist and professor at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Kuczaj is studying the animal's ability to learn behavior using symbols on slates, including tandem behaviors in which the dolphins must work together. Research also examines social behaviors given that although captive, 30 dolphins in this large area creates an almost wild situation in regards to socialization. This work is also allowing the dolphins to create their own behavior when told to "create," something that require a much higher cognitive ability.
