Little Scatwell

I love this house, which sits in an elevated position near the back road from Contin to the Meig Dam. It has a lot of interesting history and views to die for.

View from the north side. This restored castle sits between two major rivers on a small raised area of land. It has considerable history, before being abandoned in favour of a new much bigger castle a couple of miles away.

To the right are the ruins of a later dining hall built into a surrounding wall and cobbled courtyard. It was converted into a couple of cottages before being left derelict, along with the already derelict tower itself.

Cromarty Lighthouse was built in 1842 to guide ships in to the Cromarty Firth, it is a remarkably squat lighthouse compared to most that we are used to seeing around the coast with the tower topping out at 43 feet high.

The Lighthouse is now automated and the keepers accomodation has been converted into a field centre for the University of Aberdeen.

We may have been doing a wee bit of future fantasty house shopping too.... I do like Cromarty!

Syrphus sp

This male cannot be taken to species as it appears to have bare eyes which leaves 2 options, S, vitripennis or S, ribesii. If it had hairy eyes then it could safely be ID'd as S. torvus. To confuse things, however, the hairs can be minute and difficult to see!

Cladonia spore dropping

Cladonia cenotea is a strange little lichen that is associated with ancient woodlands, The brown areas at the tips are the developing fruiting bodies which produce spores.

Weird alien-like Cladonia cenotea

A stunning little lichen that is normally associated with ancient pinewoods. The flakey bits, although not packaged as spores, contain everything needed for the lichen to grow when they fall off.
