An abandoned World War Two pillbox, alongside the mouth of the River Rother, at the Sussex Wildlife Trust's Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. In all, there are 13 pillboxes on the reserve.
Each was armed with Vickers machine guns, mounted on concrete tables, and a clear view, out into the English Channel. 'Pillbox' is a contraction of 'pillar box' - because the slit windows were reminiscent of the letter slot on a post box.
