The start of a short trip in our campervan to continue around Kent (started in 2020).
A lovely walk around Rye Harbour Nature Reserve on a rather chilly, but dry day.
The black headed gulls were pairing up.

First Line Of Defence

An abandoned World War Two pillbox, alongside the mouth of the River Rother, at the Sussex Wildlife Trust's Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. In all, there are 13 pillboxes on the reserve.

Each was armed with Vickers machine guns, mounted on concrete tables, and a clear view, out into the English Channel. 'Pillbox' is a contraction of 'pillar box' - because the slit windows were reminiscent of the letter slot on a post box.

Beach Bum

Not quite what I was expecting to stumble across during a beach walk at the Sussex Wildlife Trust's Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. One for the reserve's sightings log?

Board Stiff

Life-expired 1930s timber groynes, between the River Rother estuary and Winchelsea beach, at the Sussex Wildlife Trust's Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Over the years, the pounding waves of the English Channel have reduced to matchwood barriers designed to prevent longshore drift.

A birding couple looking - in vain, on this occasion - for something interesting at Sussex Wildlife Trust's Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.
