Scarborough - North Bay

With a population of more than 60.000 Scarborough is the largest town on the Yorkshire Coast.

Scarborough was founded by Danes in the 10th century. This was soon attacked and burnt down by Anglo-Saxon tribes. The town recovered during the reign of Henry II.

In 1253, the Scarborough Fair was established by royal decree and held annually for 500 years. The six-week trade fair attracted merchants from all over Europe. To this day, the custom has been passed down in the English folk song of the same name.

In 1626, an acidic mineral spring was discovered. The spring was called Scarborough Spa, it was regarded as a healing spring and became very popular from the 1660s onwards. Scarborough thus became Britain's first spa in the early modern era. The opening of the York-Scarborough railway line in 1845 contributed to an increased influx of visitors to the seaside resort

While the South Bay of Scarborough is busy and noisy, the North Bay is quiet and peaceful. Seen on the peak of the promontory are the ruins of Scarborough Castle.

Papa’s Fish & Chips is a chain of Fish & Chips restaurants, claiming to offer Britain´s best Fish & Chips. The food was good, but the best? They could not convince me.

Three passenger carrying funicular railways were built along the coastline before anywhere else in the UK.

The first was the "Scarborough Spa Lift", built in 1875, now operated by Scarborough Borough Council. The "Queens Parade Cliff Railway" was a short-lived endeavour that lasted just 10 years

Built in 1881, just 14 years after the completion of the Grand Hotel, the "Central Tramway" opened to the public on Monday the 1st of August. The opening day was a huge success with almost 3000 passengers travelling.

The Tramway was originally steam powered. It works on a simple counter balance principle, using gravity to assist much of the movement. Today the system is driven by a 60 horse power electric motor..

In 1867, when the Grand Hotel opened for guests it was the largest hotel and the largest brick structure in Europe.

During the 1910s, The Grand Hotel Scarborough was the place to be within the area and even provided evening entertainment.

The hotel was badly damaged in December 1914, during a raid on the town by the German Navy. It was reported that the hotel was hit at least 30 times. In 1939, the hotel became the home to RAF trainees and the corner cupolas housed anti-aircraft guns.

It took some years to get the hotel back in shape after WWII, but during the 1960s and 70s the hotel saw a dip in customers due to the increasing desire for abroad holidays, resulting in a decline in the "British Seaside Holiday".

Meanwhile millions of pounds went into renovation and the hotel, now own by "Brittania Hotels" catering towards the budget end of the spectrum.

Scarborough Harbour

Taken during the Scarborough Fair Lights festival. The conditions were extremely windy, hence the soft water with movement of the boats showing through during the long exposure.

Long exposure in windy conditions

Scarborough Harbour during the Scarborough Fair Lights festival. I was able to soften the water, and the lights were not too bad, but the wind increased the movement of the boats, which blurred the image too much! More practise is required!

Are You Going To Scarborough Fair?

Well it's back to Sydney harbour for this photo of 'Scarborough'.
'Scarborough' is a First Fleet Class ferry.

And to accompany 'Scarborough', as it passes McMahons Point and the Blues Point Tower, here is the VERY lovely Sarah Brightman with her gorgeous version of: 'Are You Going To Scarborough Fair?'

Now apparently Scarborough Fair was held in Scarborough, in North Yorkshire, England, from the 1200s to the 1800s. And, as I discovered, Scarborough is a coastal town with a beach. It looks amazing - a bit like Bondi here in Sydney!! What a groovy place for a fair. And I thought Yorkshire was bleak, as in 'Wuthering Heights', which was set someone in Yorkshire.

So here's information about the cool coastal township of Scarborough. Check out the amazing beach. A great place for parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Anyway, back to Sydney, and the 'Scarborough' ferry is travelling past McMahons Point on its way to Milsons Point and then Circular Quay. Oh - and I used a zoom lens, so you can zoom in on the 'Scarborough' ferry.

Photographed from the other side of the harbour at Wharf 2/3, Walsh Bay Wharf Precinct - Hickson Road, Dawes Point.
