Spring of 2021: The COVID-19 measures have made it almost impossible to leave the country or even stay in a hotel. In fact, we had planned to visit Ukraine during these days, but we ended up on a week-long trip through Bavaria, Saxony, and Brandenburg, which actually brought us a great time together.

The switch-off signals shortly before the protektive section. The ICE from Chur towards Hamburg just passes this point. From the opposite direction there are switch-on signals mounted here. The round signs with an H refer to station Maienfeld. Switzerland, March 12, 2020. (3/6)

SBB - Traction Current Protective Section (Intro)

A new non-permanent catenary protective section on the SBB line between Maienfeld and Landquart. These are the presignals seen from the south, about 450 m before the switch-off signals. The white triangle above means that they must only be minded when they are on. The activation of this system is only necessary if the feed of the traction current comes from a substation of RhB. The train driver must then pass the protective section with the main switch turned off. Why this supply option with traction current from RhB was realized up to here I don't know. The SBB runs freight trains in the RhB area as far as Domat-Ems. The signals are dark on the photos, but the shapes that would shine yellow can be seen on the close-ups. The IC 3 from Zurich to Chur in the photo is already a little older, but the photo is new. This site is 9644 m from the zero point in Sargans. Switzerland, March 12, 2020. (1/6)

Here the two catenary sections come together, separated by a piece that can be switched off. But normally there is a continuous feed-in from the SBB substation. Switzerland, March 12, 2020. (5/6)

MGB Segnas - Departing Train (special procedure)

Departure of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn from Segnas towards Oberalp Pass. Above the exit switch, approx. 15 m ahead of the locomotive, there is a traction current protective section without electricity. The engineer has 10 seconds to accelerate the train. Then he turns off the main switch, which can be heard as a pop. The train rolls without drive for 6 seconds, then the engineer switches on again and accelerates.

That's because the locomotive should not run under load from one traction current feed-in to the other. As a passenger on this train you do not notice this procedure. In an electrical multiple unit, you can hear the switching process if you sit in the area of the pantograph.

As far as I know, this is the only easily accessible place where you can have a closer look at this process. The station will be moved further away from this point in this year. The train in the video accelerates well, but it's almost empty. An engineer told me it had already happened, that the pantograph had to be changed when the locomotive got stuck in the de-energized part. The situation with the short start-up distance is not ideal. Switzerland, Jan 13, 2018. (1/4)

MGB Segnas - Traction Current Protective Section

Protective section in the catenary at station Segnas of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. Two different feed-ins from substations are separated. The two yellow signs mean, that the engine driver must turn off the main switch to run through this section. If the departure is against this place it had to be a few meters after accelerating. The locomotive should not run under load from one traction current feed-in to the other. Unusually, this point is inside the station area. It already happened that a train got stuck while leaving from the station. If then lowered pantograph is already outside the electroless section, the situation can be saved. The station will be shifted downwards in the foreseeable future. Switzerland, Dec 24, 2017.
