The Symposion
The vessels in this case depict scenes associated with the sympsion -- literally, a "drinking together" -- which took place after an evening meal. Symposiasts (male drinkers) reclined on couches or cushions, and wine was mixed with water in a large bowl. If women were present, they were there primarily as entertainment. After offerings were made and drinks were distributed, participants told stories praised the beauty of young men, debated serious matters, or played games. Proceedings often concluded with a high spirited dance, or komos, on the way home.
