Pop & Mom Lion

Happy Father's Day to responsible human fathers. Male lions do little more than sire cubs and sleep. Occasionally they hunt or defend the pride, but they typically satisfy their stomachs before letting the others share in the meat of a kill. That may be normal and expected behavior for lions, but better character is expected of men. Here's honors to all good fathers who fulfill their roles of protecting, providing, inspiring, mentoring and loving with integrity.

Constantia Nek Hike :

This route is steady and gentle. It offers diverse, 360° views of Hout Bay, the Southern Peninsula and out over the Cape Flats and beyond. Stop at the lovely De Villier's Dam for a snack at the top.

Wreck of the Meisho Maru No. 38 XIII

On 16 November 1982, the Meisho Maru No. 38, a Japanese fishing boat, ran aground on the jagged rocks at Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. Thankfully, the wreck happened close enough to the shore that the crew were all able to swim to safety.

The Meisho Maru No. 38 has slowly been disintegrating ever since. Only the bow is now visible and it is expected that in just a few years its surprising after-career as a photographic hook for visitors to southernmost South Africa will finally be over.

Needless to say, I took many shots of this evocative scene during my two-night stay in the area.

Southern Boubou - (Laniarius ferrugineus)

The southern boubou is a bushshrike. The Southern Boubou feeds mostly on insects, including bees – the birds rub the stings off before swallowing them. They also eat snails, geckoes, mice, birds’ eggs, nestling birds, earthworms, fruits and nectar, and even crumbs, grain and discarded porridge. They can become tame around human habitation.

Southernmost Tip of Africa Prayer Centre

The Southernmost Tip of Africa Prayer Centre was never open when I was in the area, so I never worked out exactly who ran it or what it was all about. It is in the little town of L'Agulhas about 1½ km/1 mile from the southernmost point. I photographed it mainly for its thatched roof.

The gorgeous Blou Krans

I got the opportunity to get extremely close to the Blou Krans. This is South Africas national bird. Isn't it gorgeous?
