This stunning view captures the arid beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert, framed by the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains. These mountains, part of the Peninsular Ranges, rise dramatically from the desert floor, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding terrain. Known for their geological diversity and ancient history, the Santa Rosa Mountains were once home to the Cahuilla people, who thrived in this challenging landscape. The foreground is dotted with cholla cacti and desert shrubs, showcasing the hardy vegetation adapted to this harsh yet enchanting desert environment.

I've seen very few of the mountain ranges' namesake, the chuckwalla lizard, in the area. But I have seen quite a few Southwestern Speckled rattlesnakes here. So as far as I'm concerned, these are the Speckled Rattlesnake Mountains.

This was taken on a winter morning in 1984 in the western reaches of the Mojave Desert known as the Antelope Valley. I was facing east southeast with the San Gabriel Mountains in the background and this beautiful backlit lenticular cloud filling the horizon.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Borrego Springs, California, USA - March 13, 2019: Springtime bloom of wildflowers carpeting the desert floor with purple and yellow colors.

A wildflower “super bloom” has taken hold of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park here in Southern California. The heavy rains we had in San Diego this past winter has paid dividends in the form of the eruption of colors in a normally barren desert landscape.
