Barbitistes obtusus - the Southern Saw-tailed Bush-cricket (male)

Plateau des Gras, Bidon, Ardèche, France

Order : Orthoptera
Family : Phaneropteridae
Sub-Family : Phaneropterinae
Genus : Barbitistes
Species : Barbitistes obtusus

This very colourful cricket is quite large, described as being up to 20mm in length, but I would say that this individual was certainly larger than that. The colour of this species is quite variable and dark individuals like this one are quite rare. This flightless species is quite secretive, mainly active at night and hiding away in a cool shaded place during the day. Distribution is restricted to the alpine regions of France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Slovenia.
The habitat for Barbitistes obtusus is scrubland or light forest mainly at altitude, usually up to around 2000m asl, where it feeds on the leaves of deciduous trees, broad-leaved herbs, and small invertebrates. In the lowlands it has been largely displaced by intensive farming and forestry.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.
