GOLDEN GROSBEAK Male Pheucticus chrysogaster. A male Golden Grosbeak is perched on a branch at the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge in northern Ecuador at 9:34 AM on October 15, 2019.
The Golden Grosbeak belongs to the family Cardinalidae (Cardinals and Allies) and lives in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Perú. Pheucticus chrysogaster was earlier known by the common names Golden-bellied Grosbeak and Southern Yellow Grosbeak. Some workers consider it to be conspecific with the Yellow Grosbeak P. chrysopeplus of Guatemala and Mexico.
The remarkable Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge is located in northern Ecuador about a one hour drive south of Quito near the small town of Tambillo. After turning to the east at Tambillo, one drives about 10 minutes to Amaguaña where a right turn puts you on the road to San Pedro de Pilopata from which one continues uphill to the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is situated in the semicircular collapsed Pasochoa Volcano. Around 100,000 years ago, the volcano exploded and blew off the western half of the preexisting volcanic cone. The refuge is known for its well preserved native vegetation and is situated above a swath of beautiful pastureland facing the interandean valley to the west.

This male Southern Yellow Grosbeak, Pheucticus chrysogaster, was perched along the side of the road leading to the Pasochoa Forest Reserve south of Quito. The species is also known as the Golden Grosbeak and the Golden-bellied Grosbeak.

This bird has a little red tinge on its bill and head feathers which may indicate that it was feeding by placing its head within the ovoid capsule of a cactus fruit.
