AEC Mandator, GUL 120N

As mentioned elsewhere, when Walters Transport took-over Rossers of Pontlliw, they refurbished a number of their old Mandators for a steel hauling contract. New to Texaco in March 1975, GUL 120N was one of those motors and is seen here in the yard at Pontlliw with other retired Mandators. She was last on the road in June 1989.

Atkinson, JTH 12P

Late, September 1975 registered Atkinson Defender tipper JTH 12P, may not have been new to the NCB, but she certainly ended her days with them. Seen here at Abercwmboi Phurnacite Plant in 1988.

AEC Mercury, NTX 906R

1976 AEC Mercury dray of Crown Buckley Brewery, showing the nice blue and cream livery adopted after Buckley's of Llanelli took-over the Crown Brewery of Pontyclun. NTX 906R was the last AEC Mercury dray on the fleet and lasted until 1994. Now even the brewery itself has vanished under a housing estate. That's economic progress to our successive governments, but not to my mind it isn't.

AEC, Q389 UHB by ergomammoth

AEC, Q389 UHB

It may be badged as a 'Mercury', but I am pretty certain that this AEC is a Mammoth Major 6. As the recovery vehicle for Rhondda Buses, it is seen here on a typical South Wales day in the early nineties. The bodywork appears to be made-up of part of the body from a Leyland National bus!

Marathon 2, BTH 892V

Leyland Marathon 2, BTH 892V, has come to the end of its eleven and a half years of working life. She is seen here shortly after retirement in the summer of 1991 still in the livery of her last owner:- M.J Williams Transport of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

B Morgan Mandator

In the shed at Rossers other yard at Pontlliw, was the cannibalized remains of this AEC Mandator, still wearing the livery of its former owner - B Morgan (Transport) from Swansea. Registered KEU 225K in August 1971, it was possibly new to Western B.R.S, although another source says it was new to C Williams of Brynmawr. What is apparent, however, is that it was only ever used by Rossers as a source of spares.

Freighter, B108 JRC

I'm am pretty certain that this Leyland Freighter coal hopper was new to the NCB, especially on that Derbyshire reg. Here she is seen in a declining condition with Alan Price awaiting the hot knife.

Beaver 690 Turbo

This rare version of the Leyland Beaver artic fitted with the 690 Turbocharged Leyland diesel, was once part of the fleet of H. Morgan & Sons Haulage Ltd, from Marine Street, Cwm. Although in a very sad state when photographed here, I believe that, thankfully, this rare motor was purchased for restoration.

ERF E14, E185 ALG

A rather sad-looking ERF E14 6x2 twinsteer artic, that was once part of the fleet of 'the other hauliers' from Pontlliw, W. Walters & Son. I took this photo because I liked the traditional signwriting on this lorry, of the type that was once common on South Wales haulage fleets, but now largely a thing of the past.

Patriotic Sed-Atki 400

ONY 222R, a Seddon-Atkinson 400 of John Raymond Transport, decked-out in the Union Flag for the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977. Shame then that Raymond's went to to buy a vast number of Volvos after running Atkinsons for many years. Some people would say that that was progress I suppose.

ERF E14 6x2 artic, from the late lamented fleet of Illtyd Thomas from Swansea. The firm worked-out of Metal Box at Poole, hence the inclusion of that location on the front panel.

Ironrails Marathon

Rather rough looking Leyland Marathon artic, EHB 778V of Ironrails from Carmarthen, with a Roadtrain of their's in the background. This unusually named company had finished around the time this picture was taken in 1991.
