Photo-a-day Lent Calendar, 2024, for A Hobbling A Day. The corridor along the back of the Spanish Colonial Arts Museum overlooks a large patio and lets in New Mexico's light. You can rent the patio if you want to throw a dinner party.

Living Room, Spanish Colonial Arts Museum

The living room in the Spanish Colonial Arts Museum is furnished in traditional New Mexican style of the period. It also functions as a book store, with works about local arts.

The Santa Fe Trail (1821-1889) brought in goods from the eastern United States and Europe. El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (1598-1880) brought in goods from Mexico and South America. Old Spanish Trail (1829-1880) brought in goods from California and Asia. Santa Fe became a hub of international trade in the 1800s. The exchange of Spanish, American Indian, Mexican, and US cultures inspired a uniquely New Mexican art. The museum displays it, both historic and modern.

Spanish Colonial Arts Museum

The Pueblo-Spanish Revival building was designed in 1930 by John Gaw Meem, one of Santa Fe's most prominent architects. It was the residence of the director of the Laboratory of Anthropology. Thirty buildings were planned. The laboratory and the residence were completed. Then the Great Depression hit. In 1994 an anonymous donor gave the property to the Spanish Colonial Arts Society to establish a museum.

46-34 Soul Music, New Mexico Style

Photo-a-day Lent Calendar, 2024, for A Hobbling A Day. La Muerte Goes For A Ride was a done by two boys in the Lowrider Bike Club youth project in Española. As soon as I saw it, I was reminded of Death climbing on a chopper in Soul Music by Terry Pratchett.

This project has given me the opportunity to dig deeper into New Mexican culture.
