Old Byzantine Monasteries on the threshold of heaven from Mount Athos to Crete and from the Aegean to the Ionian and across the country function as cradles of culture and as rare spiritual centres.

All of them have played a valuable role in different periods of Greek history protecting and sometimes preserving the Greek language,
