I am standing on the Staffordshire side of the River Manifold. The view beyond encompasses the Derbyshire side of the Peak District village. The view includes the Grade II-listed Mary Watts-Russell Memorial Cross, a 19th century monument in the style of a medieval Eleanor Cross.

The North Staffordshire Moors pub is renowned not just for good food and beer but also as a veritable Alladin’s Cave of antiques and artefacts. These include a working player-piano and a Victorian juke box. I visited with my father one wintry Saturday, when ice from an earlier snowfall remained on the ground. We exchanged our modern money for £sd coins to operate the antique machines and had a hoot.
That was a memorable day in my life 36 years ago, and to my delight, the Yew Tree Inn still welcomes visitors today. The player-piano still works and uses the old money. The pub’s website states that times have been challenging of late, so I urge all Flickr friends who live nearby to drop in and have some fun.
