Aberhill based Stagecoach East Scotland 11176 was captured westbound on Princes Street during a short shower. This was my first sight of the latest Stagecoach livery which the company describes as steel blue. The 2019 Enviro 400 was operating the 1510 hrs X61 from Edinburgh Bus Station to Kirkcaldy via the two south Fife Park + Ride sites at Ferrytoll and Halbeath. Since 2022, Stagecoach has been owned by a fund owned by DWS, a German asset management company. Stagecoach was founded in Perth in 1980. Stagecoach East Scotland is based in Dunfermline.

When contemplating this facade, I was immediately struck by this black structure with golden edges that seemed to float against the concrete, like a musical score etched into matter. I wanted to capture this duality between the mathematical rigor of the architecture and the almost poetic dimension created by the rhythmic repetition of elements.
The soft daylight allowed me to reveal the subtle variations of blue in the raw concrete, creating a cold yet living backdrop for these black blades with their warm edges. I chose a frontal, uncluttered framing to transform this portion of architecture into a visual abstraction close to painting.
In this quest for the essential, I sought to transcend the purely functional nature of the building to reveal its sculptural and meditative dimension. What fascinated me was the tension between the horizontality of the lines and the ascending movement of the whole - as if these black and gold strata were levitating, defying gravity and transforming concrete into a canvas for contemporary architectural calligraphy.
Stagecoach vehicles have now started to be outshopped apace in the new steel blue livery. Seen looking smart in Highworth, is former Stagecoach Gold liveried SN18 KUR, an Alexander-Dennis Enviro400 MMC new to Cheltenham & Gloucester as 10984 in August 2018.

The first vehicle in the East Midlands fleet and the second Enviro 400MMC in the country to receive the new Steel blue corporate colour was 10738.
It entered service in Hull for the first time like this on January 27th 2025. This follows the initial painting of Yorkshire example 11716 in the revised colour in November '24.
An experimental colour of Midnight blue was trialled on Enviro 400MMCs 10661 from August 5th and 11716 from September 27th. Thankfully, the almost black in appearance hue was rejected by the company in favour of a far more pleasing shade in my opinion.

While capturing this facade, my intention was to reveal the hidden poetry within modern architecture. I was particularly drawn to the unlikely encounter between the rigidity of geometric lines and the fluidity of reflections on the windows. The contrast between the upper part, almost organic in its changing reflections, and the lower section, strictly geometric, seemed to tell a story about the duality of our urban environment. By choosing this angle and diagonal framing, I wanted to create a visual tension that invites the viewer to question their perception of urban space. The natural color palette, between the cold blues of the reflections and the warm tones of the lower panel, reinforces this narrative between nature and artifice that I was seeking to highlight.
Their pastel pink and steel blue hairstyles add equal parts elegance and edge. With subtle details like the butterfly and scarf, these two embody a bold and impactful style. They're not afraid to stand out from the crowd.
