When I was a young lad, there were Sunoco Gas Stations all over Toronto. The stations were often adorned with the winged Staff of Caduceus, in my neighbourhood the staff was topped with a red flame in glass that was bottom lit.

These stations always had the best signage, the streetside signs were either in neon or backlit, but in any case the company's trademark arrow always flashed, pointing the way into the station.

Abandoned Sun Oil Company oilfield tank

The Sunoco's crude oil division used an experimental secondary recovery method on the northern tip of the Big Sinking Oilfield at Leeco, Kentucky in the late 1980's. A huge pressure plant was built with the capability of heating the water used to flood the oil sand. The project was on the White Heirs holdings. After about 6 years the oil lease was sold to a small independent producer who stripped what they could from the oil basin. By 2012 the process of scrapping the equipment began. Now, there is little that remains.

Modern Mapco hides Sun Oil Co. past

Compare the old Esso to this Modern Mapco. This location had a humble building here as well however: land was aquired by Sun Oil Company in mid August, 1979. the building can be seen in this 1981 aerial photo. Most Sun Oil Stations around here operated nuder the DX brand, but a Sunoco station is of course possible as well. Either way, whatever was here at first may not of lasted long, since the current structure is listed with a 1984 year built date.

Sun Oil Company building (Sunoco)

..
City of Toronto heritage report:
"29 Basin Street: The Sun Oil Company Building is identified as a significant cultural
resource for architectural reasons. The Sun Oil Company has occupied this location on
the south side of Basin Street, near its intersection with Bouchette Street where it backs
onto the Ship Channel, as early as 1921. In 1930, T. H. Mothershill and Company
designed the office building. With its attention to detailing, shown in the stonework,
Classically-embellished entrance and nameband reading “Sun Oil Company Ltd”, the
building stands out among the industrial structures in the Port Lands Industrial Area."

I don't know where I got this at. I think it was on a yard sale in the 80's. Might be older.
