Gruvbio, Höganäs, Sweden, Sixties

Since: 1954
Address: KKAM Museet, Polhemsgatan 1, Höganäs, Sweden

A souvenir postcard from Höganäs-Billesholms AB, Höganäs (Sweden) with hardly any information other than "Höganäs gruvbio 100 m under jord" or "Höganäs mine cinema 300 feet underground".

The Höganäs coal mine in the county of Skåne, opened in 1797. The thin layer of coal was quite close to the surface, under a layer of sand. After mining coal for many decades, later clay was mined.
In 1954 this small cinema was added at a depth of 100 meters, and unique in Sweden.
As the mine closed down in 1961, the cinema was later added to the Höganäs Museum och Konsthall in 1967 I believe, which I think why this photo is from around that time.

I recently purchased an animated instruction film on 16mm, "Safety Senses" for British Coalmine workers and then remembered I had this curious postcard.

The cinema can still be visited today (kkam.nu/en/exhibitions/the-mine/) showing films on coal mining, pottery and local artists.

Cine Plaza, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, 1967

Since: 19-03-1947 (closed 1994)
Address: Av. 16 de Septiembre, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
CinemaTreasures.org ID: 1723
Film on Marquee: EL FABULOSO MUNDO DEL CIRCO (CIRCUS WORLD, 1964)

I like it how Mexican postcards have this warm earthy hue, desaturated colours. Here's a postcard of a vivid street scene with the Cine Plaza. "JOHN WAYNE - EL FABULOSO MUNDO DEL CIRCO." on the Marquee of the Plaza must be a rerun, as it premiered in Mexico on September 9th, 1965.
"NEVADA SMITH Y VICTIMA ..." advertises the 1966 movie "NEVADA SMITH" and another film I can't make out (nor the actor above the title). It premiered in Mexico on April 27th, 1967.
The cinema designed by architect Aurelio G. Mendoza featured a giant atmospheric auditorium seating 3.000 (some sources state 1.900) patrons on three levels, one of the largest in Latin America. It opened with the film "ENAMORADA" (1946) by Emilio "El Indio" Fernández. It showed Hollywood and Mexican films.
The Cine Victoria for which I also have a postcard is just two blocks down the road.

Check out the giant blue poster on the facade of the building next door with the Sci-Fi Rocket spaceship. "1967 Nos Supersomething EL Mercado something." Can you make out what it says?

Robert (Bobby) Howe Walthour

Walthour - Stayer Américain
Champion du Monde de Fond 1904-1905.

Postcard published by E. Beauvais, éditeur, 36, rue d'Oran, Paris.
Carte postale. A utiliser seulement dans le service intèrieur (France - Algérie - Tunesie)

"Postcard. To be used only in the domestic service (France - Algeria - Tunisia)."

As a stayer, he grew to become the richest athlete in the world. A very unpleasant man, by all accounts.

Paris 1902

Photo of a track race held in Paris in 1902 behind big motorbikes. It looks to me like the start of the race; the moment when the cyclists have to find ‘their’ pacer. Indeed, the cyclists still look fresh, I think.

This card was sent in April 1903 from Trieste to Miss Anna X in Speising in Vienna's 13th district. Now Italian and Austrian respectively but still two cities within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

‘Miss’ says it all; Anna X was an unmarried or young woman.

On Google Maps, I saw that the house in question still exists. A well-maintained, detached house located some way off the road with a spacious garden surrounded by tall trees and hedges.

As the caption has been largely rendered thoroughly illegible, the question remains as to why exactly she received this card. Could the sender possibly have been one of the four cyclists? Nice thought.

There is also an interesting but not rare stamp on it. That green of 5 with the image of Emperor Franz-Joseph.

A stamp that in late 1914, like the red of 10, was used to quickly issue two stamps with surcharge. The surcharge was intended to support widows and orphans after the disastrous Battle of Lemberg for Austria-Hungary.

The battle of Lemberg
In the First World War, the Battle of Lemberg, now Lviv in Ukraine, took place from 23 August 1914 to 11 September 1914. A major battle between the Russian Empire and Austria-Hungary in the Austrian province of Galicia.

The battle ended with the Russians taking Lemberg. 300,000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers were killed or wounded. In addition, the Russians made a total of 130,000 prisoners of war.

1904 - Postcard from Zurich to Lanz (G)

Postcard sent 18 August 1904 from Zurich Neu Münster to Frau Di. Marie ******** in Lanz a place with then less than 1400 inhabitants in Brandenburg (today less than 700). Further address is missing and was apparently not needed.

No idea what the abbreviation Di. stands for.
Nor can I read what is written below the three photos.

The leftmost man is wearing a priest's collar.

A number plate ‘13356’ is mounted on the bicycle. A tax sign?
No lights but the bicycle does have a bell and mudguards.

Schouwburg Heerenveen, 1939

Since: 15-10-1934
Address: Crackstraat 4-6, Heerenveen
Film on Marquee: DE BAKVISCH (THAT CERTAIN AGE, 1938)
CinemaContext.nl ID: B000673

Advertised is Canadian actress and singer Deanne Durbin and "De Bakvisch", the Dutch title for THAT CERTAIN AGE. It premiered in the Netherlands on Christmas Eve 1938. Since the young woman with her bike in the lower right corner is wearing a white dress I'm assuming the weather is rather nice, let's say spring. So this must be 1938.
The Schouwburg (a theater for plays, but also screening movies) was open for many decades. It closed in 1990. When it opened it seated 775. It was designed by architect C.J. Wierd.
While the shop on the right and church behind it still exist, the theater was torn down to make place for an ugly building housing the Town Hall.

1897 - Remarkable cycling race with live pacing

Up ahead, the cyclist rides behind a triplet, followed by two riders who apparently don't think their own tandems are fast enough.

The sender of the card says nothing about it to the addressee. She only sends greetings.
