A busy little egret (Egretta garzetta) invades the personal space of a statuesque grey heron (Ardea cinerea) at low tide on the mudflat of Starcross Sand. Unlike the little egret - almost constantly moving and periodically jabbing its beak into the shallow water, like someone at a street market - the feeding strategy of the grey heron mostly seemed to involve long periods of standing very, very still. I could almost imagine its frustration as the little egret casually waded into its space, disturbing everything. Fortunately for me, the egret did pause long enough in front of its larger relative for me to capture the otherwise calm estuary scene. Part of the Shelly Beach frontage and Exmouth Marina development are visible in the background. Exe Estuary, Devon, UK, 25-Sep-2024.
