Polistes dominula

European paper wasp (Polistes dominula; Vespidae, Hymenoptera). Very common along river Gauja (Latvia, Valmiera, 22nd August 2023). Here resting on a seedbox of Silene latifolia (white campion).

Fieldstack (rainy spell) of a live specimen, based on 82 exposures (fast method); assembled in Zerene Stacker (Pmax & Dmap). Sony A6500 + Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x ultra macro apo; ISO-200, f/4, 1/500 sec, -1.0 step, all natural light.

Asian hornet with prey

Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) with a german wasp (Vespula germanica). Both found in the garden (Boom, Belgium, 8th October 2023). Asian hornets are invasive and prey on bees, flies & wasps.

Studio work with dead specimens from a wasp trap. Stack of 107 images; assembled in Zerene Stacker (Dmap & Pmax). Sony A7RM5, FE 2.8/90 Macro G OSS; ISO-100, f/6.3, 1/20 sec, -0.7 step, diffused daylight.
