“Bonanza” was an iconic American Western television series that aired on NBC from September 12, 1959 to January 16, 1973. Spanning 14 seasons with 431 hour-long episodes, it stands as NBC’s longest-running Western. The entire run of the series was produced in color.
The show is set in the 1860s and revolves around the wealthy Cartwright family who live near Virginia City, Nevada, bordering Lake Tahoe. It is celebrated for its portrayal of moral dilemmas and family values. The title “Bonanza” refers to a large deposit of silver ore, symbolizing the 1859 revelation of the Comstock Lode near the fictional Ponderosa Ranch operated by the Cartwrights.
Pernell Roberts left Bonanza in 1965, but the popularity of the show, now with only two sons, remained undiminished. However, the unexpected death of Dan Blocker in 1972 left a bigger hole, and Bonanza ended one season later. [Source: Wikipedia]
