1934 Austin 7, Beamish Safety and Reliability (Trial) Run

Described as "probably the oldest and toughest regular event for old cars, motorcycles and light commercials certainly in Britain". The Beamish run is celebrating it's 50th year and follows some of the routes used by manufacturers to test the same vehicles when originally built.

For snowbound Flickr viewers. Taken from the Pennine Way above Thwaite (hidden by the trees). That's Muker in the distance.

It's a much needed rain day here in the Lakes, so I'm reaching back to the Dales.

The Garden I Wish I Had, Muker

Nestled in the center of Muker - a lovely Dales village where a number of "All Creatures" scenes were filmed - this beautiful garden overlooks Thwaitedale where it joins Swaledale. Another very important "amenity" is the footpath beside the garden that leads directly to the Farmers Arms pub just below.

So imagine sitting at the table with pint in hand, enjoying the view and the sound of sheep bleating in the background - and hoping the sun will come out soon:-)

Dales Morning Rush Hour

One of perks of staying in Thwaite (and on holiday) is that every couple of days the village farmer moves his herd of sheep from a field on one side of the village to the field on the other side. Unlike most commutes and traffic jams, this one only lasts about 5 minutes plus the time for the sheep dogs to round up the reluctant stragglers.

This morning a lamb heading in the wrong direction was being herded by two dogs and as the dogs got close the lamb leaped right over both of them and kept going the way he wanted to go.

The shaggy sheep hasn't been sloppily sheared. Some types of sheep whose wool is not marketable have been bred to molt to save the cost of shearing.

Swaledale breed. Sheep far outnumber the humans in Thwaitedale.
