This was my submission for the Bricklink "A Pirates Dream" contest/challenge.
Two Islanders, on board the Con-Briki, sail past a small island poking up from a shallow reef, where a hermit crab considers a discarded bottle as a potential new home! Perhaps the Islanders are also en route to a new home in far and distant lands, though with a stunning lack of provisions for such a journey (thanks to a 300 part limit), it is more likely they are just out for a day sail!
6256 Islanders Catamaran was one of the few but loved Pirate sets I had as a child. When I saw the red kayaks in the City Jungle theme, I began to think of how I could create a new catamaran with those unique pieces. The platform of the "kayakamaran" is constructed to look like a log raft, with inspiration coming from Kon-Tiki, the balsawood raft used by Thor Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition from South America to the Polynesian Islands. I wanted the sail to share some elements of the original, particularly the face, and it took a little bit to get the composition correct. The serpent heads look a little more like Asian dragons than South American Quetzalcoatl feathered serpents, but hey, that's because geography in the brick world remains a mystery!
