Fiddler's Green is a sculpture located on the Fish Quay at North Shields, dedicated to fishermen who lost their lives at sea. It was made by Ray Lonsdale, who also made the famous 'Tommy' soldier sculpture in Seaham. This sculpture is based on the legend of Fiddler’s Green

To the fishermen lost in the cold North Sea,
and the ones who will be so,
I’ll be seeing you all on Fiddler’s Green,
be steady as you go.

For Fiddler’s Green is a place I’ve heard tell,
though no one really knows,
where the fishermen go if they don’t go to hell,
and no Arctic wind will blow.

Fiddler's Green
Ray Lonsdale

Fiddler's Green is an after-life where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops playing, and dancers who never tire. In 19th-century English maritime folklore, it was a kind of after-life for sailors who had served at least fifty years at sea.
