Phnom Penh, known as the Pearl of Asia, sits at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap Rivers. These two rivers merge to form the Tonlé Bassac River, which flows south away from Phnom Penh and across the border into Vietnam. This complex hydrological system is situated in the Mekong floodplain, which is home to many natural and agricultural habitats. As one of the most productive ecosystems, this region is of great importance for Cambodia’s food provisions.
