Ribble 045 (D725 YBV)

New to the United Transport "Zippy" operation in Preston, which mirrored the similar and perhaps more famous Bee Line venture in Manchester. Upon takeover by Ribble, the Zippy name was retained in certain instances, right through to Stagecoach days, with some examples even bearing white-and-stripe.

Number 045 is of course running out of Bolton garage in this view.

Bolton, Moor Lane Bus Station, 27/07/1991.

CLYDESIDE 2000 272 D372SGP

D372SGP was a Fiat 49.10 / Elme B22F new as United Transport number 064 in July 1987. It passed to Ribble with part of the business in March 1988. On disposal in August 1993 it was acquired by Sandy Hewitt t/a Paisley Hopper on paper at least, who was also the cleaning contractor for Clydeside at the time! Two months later the firm was "purchased" by Clydeside 2000 along with 5 of these buses. It has been suggested that this was simply a ploy by Clydeside to boost staff morale. If it was a genuine deal, why were no further companies bought out at the time? I don't suppose the truth will ever be revealed.

D416FRV was a Fiat 49.10 / Robin Hood B19F new as United Transport number 006 in April 1987. It passed to Ribble with the business, before reaching Dewvale Ltd t/a Bellview Coaches, and is seen at Paisley Cross.

MARTIN'S TRANSPORT OF LANGBANK D414FRV

D414FRV was a Fiat 49.10 / Robin Hood B19F new as United Transport number 004 in April 1987. In January 1987 BET PLC briefly re-entered the UK bus market, when United Transport formed the Bee Line Buzz Company to operate minibus services in the Manchester area, and started a similar operation in Preston called Zippy. However, in 1988 United sold Bee Line and Zippy to Ribble Motor Services (coincidentally once owned by BET). On disposal it passed to Bellview Coaches of Paisley, but is seen in the livery of the later Martin's Transport.

ERF MW, ROW 624M

The Motor Panels cabbed ERF MW Series was quite a rare vehicle and very few found their way onto the fairground circuit. One that did was this April 1974 model, ROW 624M, fitted with a Gardner 240 diesel. New to a subbie of United Transport as 4x2 artic, I suspect on that Hampshire registration, she probably worked-out of Southampton Docks. This motor was last on the road in 1990.

Zipping along

Iveco minibus D410 FRV is being driven along Hagley Road in Birmingham by a mechanic. The bus was probably on it's way to Carlyle works, home of Midland Red. The Iveco carries the owner's name as United Transport of Picadilly London and is Zippy 001...The vehicle no longer troubles the DVLA like so many of it's ilk it probably was thrashed for a few years then mercifully scrapped.
