Auch 2025 wird noch eine Nachtzugverbindung zwischen Sighetu Marmației und der rumänischen Hauptstadt Bukarest angeboten. Am Ausgangspunkt in Sighetu beginnt die Fahrt bei 270 Meter über Meereshöhe und führt durch die Ausläufer der Ostkarpaten hinauf bis zum 2388 Meter langen Scheiteltunnel zwischen Săcel und Dealu Ștefăniței, wo man nun eine Höhe von rund 700 Meter erreicht hat. Nach Kreuzung mit einem Regionalzug verlässt 64 1000 mit R 4116 den Bahnhof Dealu Ștefăniței. Die letzten beiden Wagen gehen dann in Beclean pe Someş auf den IRN 1642 nach Bukarest über.


A night train service continues to operate between Sighetu Marmației and the Romanian capital, Bucharest. The journey begins at 270 meters above sea level in Sighetu and climbs the Eastern Carpathians to the 2,388-meter-long summit tunnel between Săcel and Dealu Ștefăniței, where it reaches an altitude of approximately 700 meters. After crossing with a regional train, 64 1000 leaves Dealu Ștefăniței station with R 4116. The last two carriages then transfer to the IRN 1642 to Bucharest in Beclean pe Someş.

The countless semaphores at Vișeu de Jos greeted every train arriving at the station. Well...not anymore, with the recent planned (or already introduced?) suspension of services between Salva and Sighetu Marmației.

R 4116 from Sighetu Marmației to Beclean (-Cluj Napoca) was the first train we saw during our stay in Northern Transilvania, and it was headed by the 60-1115 in a heritage-style livery. We managed to snap a picture of it, as it was leaving Vișeu southbound, with the full array of semaphores in the background.

I got the idea for publishing this picture after seeing the one Thorge Bockholt had published, which shows the station in an almost unchanged state, 21 years before (*his picture is taken on the other side of the station).

The ominous clouds...

...were just like a prophecy for what was to happen to the passenger connections on this line.

When heading for the second week of our stay in Romania, we knew that the line we were to stay by in Leordina, was up to have some rough times. Due to the bad condition of the tracks, the heavy class 60 diesels from Craiova were to be replaced with lighter and more modern Siemens Desiro trainsets in the fall of 2024.

Even that didn't happen though, as I have learned from the posts of Martin, who we had met in Sighetu Marmației. Appearently, the traffic on the line is to be completely suspended - possibly due to a deal with the local bus operators, who paid the CFR not to appear here anymore.

Anyways, we therefore say goodbye to this very beautiful railway line in northern Transilvania, with this picture, showing 60-0881 with the regio train R4652 from Sighetu Marmației to Vișeu de Jos, which was slowly nearing the passenger stop Petrova.

Not far from home

During the second week of our trips în România, we were staying at a motel in a relatively remote place in Northern Transilvania, near the town of Leordina. Despite its remoteness it's a popular spot for railfans, thanks to beautiful landscapes and a fair share of the old type 60 locomotives with passenger trains.

It just so happened that our motel was 50 meters from the railway line, so that we could effortlessly photograph every single train. Here it was the regio R4652 from Sighetu Marmației to Vișeu de Jos. It is seen chugging along, just after departing from the passenger stop in Leordina, headed by 60-1356.

The line was built to transport wood, which is still an important task of the railway. In addition, the railway line has a touristic significance: On the lower 21 km section of the line between Vișeu de Sus and Paltin stations, several steam-hauled passenger trains does passenger service as well. The trains, known as Mocănița Maramureș, depart every half hour from 9 am to the valley and return to Vișeu de Sus after 2 pm. Some of the steam locomotives and cars are original Romanian vehicles, but most of the closed passenger cars came second-hand from Western countries. Most of them are Bt or B cars from the Swiss Wengernalpbahn line, which still bear the original WAB appearance, thus creating interesting train combinations with the Romanian locomotives.

In the picture the first train of the day runs next to the timber yard after the Fabrica trei stop towards Paltin with 764 457 "Lostun".

As classic as it gets [2]

Going to Romania, I hoped to see some old trucks/lorries, especially ROMAN trucks. To my surprise, such oldies were really hard to find and so I cherished each one, which I managed to photograph.

Upon arriving in Leordina for the second week of our stay, we were really surprised, as suddenly we were surrounded by old trucks. What was especially interesting is that almost all of them were Tatra 148 trucks, a relatively old series. They were made in the years 1972–1982 in the Tatra works in Kopřivnice in many versions. They are the predecessor of the Tatra 815, using a simmilar suspension for offroading.

This Tatra 148 S3 Turbo, which we managed to see was delivering gravel from a nearby mine, located on the outskirts of Vișeu de Jos. S3 here stands for a three way dumper. Cheers to the friendly driver! :)

The second week of our stay în România was focused around Maramureș, a county in Northern Transilvania, offering numerous easily conquerable mountain peaks with an elevation above 2000 meters above sea level. Due to the weather conditions, our hiking trips were suspended for the first few days, which meant we could spend some time on chasing the local trains.

The backbone of local passenger traffic throughout the valley of the river Vișeu/Visó/Wischau is the railway line Valea Vișeului–Borșa (numbered 409.), hosting the regional and long distance trains between Sighetu Marmației and Beclean (with extensions to Cluj Napoca and București). Those trains enter the line in Vișeu de Jos and head towards Valea Vișeului from there.

One of those trains is the 4655 Vișeu de Jos - Sighetu Marmației, as the only one running in the midday. After heavy rainfall we came up with an idea to photograph the train with the Vișeu river, which had a way higher level than usual. In the constantly ongoing midday drizzle we decided to photograph 60-1356 heading the 4655 right before a stop at Vișeu Bistra.

One thing very much worth pointing out on this spot - notice the hanging telephone wire "segregators", clutching at straws so as not to fall in the rapid flow of the river! I have never seen anything like this before myself and it was a really big surprise, aswell as a fun fact.
