The Victorian Fernery

As it says, The Victorian Fernery, Benmore Botanic Garden, Dunoon, Cowal, Argyll & Bute, Scotland.

Not sure why, but I didn't take any shots inside apart from on my phone but it's a fascinating building. Benmore, as I said in my last post is well worth a visit and if you don't like gardens don't be put off by the word in the title. We didn't visit much of the formal garden this time at all and managed to spend 4 hours or more there. Great place to walk the dog.

Giant Redwoods at Benmore

The avenue of Giant Redwoods at Benmore Botanic gardens are very special but maybe at risk due to climate change and disease so the team at the Botanic Gardens are currently doing some great work to try to save them, which means that for now you can't walk down the middle of the avenue. Visible from Space, well very obvious on Google maps and even Flickr's hybrid map.

Nonetheless these are spectacular trees that have been here for over 150 years, through all kinds of weather and storms including the 1968 hurricane that hit Scotland, the most powerful storm ever to hit the UK in the modern era but which hardly ever gets a mention.

According to the Royal Botanic garden Edinburgh web site, "The Redwood Avenue, planted in 1863, provides one of the best entrances to any botanic garden in the world. The Sequoiadendron Giganteum are now 50 m high but mere youngsters at 150 years old. The oldest known giant redwood reached 3,500 years according to the ring count."

The Fernery, Benmore Botanic Garden

Lovely place and an old building within the gardens, those Victorians were quite ingenious at times. I have a few phone shots of the interior which I might add if anyone is interested but this is just another interesting feature of Benmore.

Nice to sit a while and contemplate in the fresh warm autumn air. Also the sharp eyed will notice a kangaroo in the shot. No it's not a bush safari but a metal silhouette of which there are a few dotted around Benmore. "What's that you say Skippy?"

Inside the Benmore Fernery

Not the largest but a wonderfully peaceful place. I could sit in here for hours reading a book. Benmore Botanic Gardens, by Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland.
