We do not have to turn to a volume of verse to see someone wax poetically about the song sparrow. Mr. F. Schuyler Mathews in his “Field Book” says; “this bird sings best of all--sings under all conditions of weather, at all times of the day (and sometimes at night), in every month of the year, and with the cleverest understanding of melody. He is also one of the very few birds who is able to sing half a dozen songs each of which is constructively different from the other….
As a general rule the little fellow comes to us [New Hampshire and the Eastern USA] in March, and leaves about the first of November, but there are many individuals which stay all the year round.”
“Field Book of Wild Birds and Their Music” by F. Schuyler Mathews. A description of the character and music of birds, intended to assist in the identification of species common in the US east of the Rocky Mountains, with numerous reproductions of water color and monotone studies of birds, and complete musical notations of bird songs by the author.
