African Iris flower 20241119-150941

I made this photo of an African Iris flower during Melody's and my neighborhood walk in mid November 2024. We pass the home where several different flowers grow in plots near the house or in small sidewalk patches of trees, bushes, and flowers. Though I often crop the bottom of flower closeups and follow the rule of thirds, I cropped the entire flower after leveling the image. Shot using my Canon Powershot SX50 and edited using Photoshop Elements 2020.

Fence with gate surrounding front garden of neighrbohood home HFF 20250403-103103

I made this photo of an aging fence in front of a home as I returning home after an appointment with a neighborhood dentist. I think I have photographed this fence while walking either to of from a previous appoint a year before. This is from a different angle and the fence looks even more weathered. Happy fence Friday.

Waxing crescent moon 46 percent illuminated from San Francisco 20250404-230224

I saw this waxing crescent moon at 33% illumination last night as I was putting out our recycling and compost carts for Friday morning pickup. I made this photo of the waxing crescent moon at 46% illumination when I opened our garage door a half hour before midnight to check if it was visible. I was please to find it a little higher in the sky than 22 hours earlier. I shot this handheld using my Canon Powershot SX50 set at aperture preferred, spot focus, at infinity. It greatly helps that my camera has image stabilization.

Face on a fence picket HFF 20171227-160403

I made this photo of a face on a fence picket in the backyard of Melody's and my San Francisco home. Yes, I did not know the vertical boards of a wood fence were called pickets until I searched "parts of a fence" on the Internet.

Though the definition of a picket fence is: "a type of low fence made of a row of flat sticks that are pointed at the top and often painted white, which is seen as typical of a comfortable, traditional American home", I guess all wood fences made up of vertical boards are technically "Picket fences" – or, at least, fences made of pickets.

The face in this photo is on the middle picket. Shot using my Canon Powershot SX50. Happy fence Friday.

Delicately colored rose close up 20250326-150020

I made this photo of a white rose with a pinkish tinge during Melody's and my walk near the end of March 2025. We have seen many wonderful roses on this bush in the front yard of a home we frequently pass. There are always a few roses that beg to be photographed. This one particularly spoke to Melody; who would like me to make greeting cards from this image that I captured using my Canon Powershot SX50.

Meandering chainlink fence surrounding Upper Reservoir John McLaren Park San Francisco HFF 20250228-163642

I made this photo of a chain link fence that surrounds one of the lakes in the 313 acre John McLaren Park near our San Francisco home. The dark area to the right of the meandering fence is the water of the Upper Reservoir, what the lake is named. Not sure if it every was a reservoir. The path inside the fence is walkable but used mostly by pet dogs when their owners allow them to run loose. Lots of people come to John McLaren Park to walk their dogs. Many parts of this fence are not photogenic due to trees, bushes, and foliage obscuring the image. I thought this shot showed off fence well and made a good Fence Friday Photo. HFF

Woman and her dog John McLaren Park San Francisco 20250110-161107

I made this photo of a woman and her dog on a boulder as Melody and I were making our way out of John McLaren Park as we were finishing our daily walk in late afternoon on January 10, 2025. I had almost taken this shot from a distance but waited until I was close to capture this image using the live view articulating monitor on my Canon Powershot SX50.

Blood Moon solar eclipse early in progress Mar 13, 2025 20250313-212254

I made this photo of the beginning of the eclipse of the Blood Moon about half past nine the night of March 13, 2025 from the backyard of our San Francisco home. I had gone out earlier and the moon was brilliantly clear but hidden by the houses on the horizon. I should probably walked or driven up the hill to see the entire moon; or, just shot the top of it from my yard. You can barely see the craters on this cloudy image that was awaiting me later as the eclipse was starting to darken the bottom of the moon. When I went out an hour or so later, the moon was hidden in the sky. I shot this hand held using my Canon Powershot SX50. It was my only shot of the night.

New fence next to deck railing on a steep hill – seen from Athens Avalon 99 tiled steps San Francisco HFF 20250309-155359

I made this photo of a new fence next to a deck at the back of a house during Melody's and my daily walk on March 9, 2025. I shot this while standing on one of the several landings on the 99 steps bordering the Athens Avalon Greenspace a few blocks from our San Francisco home. Melody seems to climb the steps with ease. I take a bit more time and count the steps in each section as I go up: the first set is 11 stairs, the second is 13 stairs and the rest of the sets of stairs are 15 each. I usually stop at the landing after walking up 69 stairs. That is where I captured this image while I was catching my breath and resting my legs. Guess the owners of this house did not want anyone falling down the hill. Happy Fence Friday.

Donut Peach blossom after rain 20250312-164522

I made this photo of a donut peach blossom in the backyard of our San Francisco home in between rain sessions March 12, 2025. This tree is four years old and has is really coming into its own. The peaches from the blossoms are flat. Also known as Doughnut or Saturn peaches. Melody and I are looking forward to a bountiful harvest this summer.

First Quarter Moon mid afternoon seen from San Francisco 20250306-131803

This is the first of two photos I made of the first quarter moon on March 6, 2025. I used aperture preferred, spot focus, and infinity settings on my Canon Powershot SX50. Framing assist helped me locate the subject in the sky (letting me a wide angle view with the push of a button and then returning to long focal length upon release. Image stabilization also helps, though I have always had a rather steady hand. The highlighted portion of the moon was at the top during the day and was at the bottom eight hours later. You can see the night shot in the following slide.

First Quarter Moon late evening San Francisco taken from front stairs 20250306-212436

This is the second of two photos I made of the first quarter moon on March 6, 2025. I always shoot the moon as though it were a daytime shot because of the brightness. That is why it is especially to make sure the spot is on the moon, so the surrounding darkness will not influence the exposure. I used to use manual focus in the past, but find spot focus is usually sufficient to isolate the subject.
You can see the daylight shot in the previous slide.

New fence in John McLaren Park San Francisco HFF 20250216-160427

I made this photo as Melody and I were walking through John McLaren Park in mid February 2025 during our daily walk. We had taken a new route this particular day and had not see this fence before. From below, this short fence seemed out of place. When we walked to the top of the hill, however, we could see it was there to protect hikers from straying off the path onto a steep down slope. Happy Fence Friday.

Wispy clouds taken downtown San Francisco 20250114-150947

I made this photo of wispy clouds as Melody and I were leaving a warehouse store in downtown San Francisco. Often times we find it easier to park on the top floor of the three story parking garage and walk two long ramps to the main entrance, a nice sprint of a couple hundred steps. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX50 that I carry with me whenever out and about – even grocery shopping.

Bougainvillea growing over top of fence on Excelsior Ave San Francisco HFF 20240924-144303

I made this photo of a fence a few blocks from our home as Melody and I were returning from a local branch of the San Francisco public library. The photo does not look level because this fence, at the side of someone's backyard, is on a hill. Difficult to walk anywhere around our neighborhood without hills. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX50. Happy Fence Friday.

Coyote hustling up a hill in John McLaren Park San Francisco 20250219-170619

I made this photo of a coyote quickly moving up a hill as Melody and I entered John McLaren Park during our daily walk on February 19, 2025. We only saw this wild animal for a few seconds. Since I was carrying my camera on a strap around my wrist, I was able to activate the camera a grab this shot just before the coyote was hidden by the bushes. No the greatest shot in the world, but time was of the essence to even get this. There are signs in many parts of San Francisco about coyotes. Today the signs were not there but the coyote was. I shot this on the spur of the moment using the live view articulating monitor on my Canon Powershot SX50. This animal of prey looks like he has been eating well.

Mural - grafitti seen as I exited the parking lot of a home improvement store in San Francisco 20241013-165736A

I made this photo of a mural on the side of a building across the street as I exited the parking lot of a home improvement store not too far from my San Francisco home. In fact, this mural was staring me in the face as I drove out. I had seen it several times before but stopped at the curb to snap this photo using my Canon Powershot SX50. I am not savvy to what the tags mean. The buildings are representative of the city's downtown skyline.

Empty shelves in egg section SOMA grocery store downtown San Francisco 20250212-160032

I made this photo of empty shelves in the egg section during a quick shopping trip to one of the stores Melody and I patronize at least once a week for our staples. In fact, the only eggs available in any of the stores we normally patronize were 7 dozen eggs that were selling for $15.99 a dozen. Guess $1.33 each is the price point very few people are willing to spend for an egg. Among other troubles in these early months of 2025, bird flu is right at the top, and resulted in millions of chickens being culled from infected flocks. As of February 2025, bird flu infection has moved to livestock, such as cattle, and even to at least one human. I shot this on Feb 12, 2025 using my Canon Powershot SX50 that I carry with me whenever out and about.

I love banned books Thefound dot com tote bag for sale at our favorie worker owned cooperative grocer and general store 20241021-155948

I made this photo of an I ♥ BANNED BOOKS tote bag for sale at Rainbow Grocery, a worker owned cooperative grocery and general store that Melody and I patronize at least once a week. Though I captured this image in late October 2024, nearly two weeks before our general election we have every four years in the United States, this banned books slogan is even more relevant at my posting on Flickr three weeks into our new regime who the dictator wannabe who is trying his damnedest to dismantle a two hundred and forty year Democracy.

Dog etched into sidewalk 20241022-160826

I made this photo of the figure of a small dog etched into a concrete sidewalk as Melody and I were taking our daily walk. This sidewalk art was in front of a house a few blocks from our San Francisco home. I shot this at close range using the articulating live view monitor on my Canon Powershot SX50.
