Here was the year 2011 as recalled in 2017, on a concrete riverbank along the Ohio River in West Virginia.

Do you remember 2011? Look at all that manure.

The 2011 event being memorialized here is the construction of the concrete riverbank. Weird!

We see the creek "Coal Run" in Wesley Township, Ohio. by Tim Kiser

We see the creek "Coal Run" in Wesley Township, Ohio.

According to the United States Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System, there are 38 watercourses in the U.S. named "Coal Run," 35 of which are in the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The other three are in Indiana and Virginia. I'm confident that at least a few of the 38 are prettier than this one.

Somebody needs to visit them all and take pictures. It won't be me!, I'm too busy.

Look for the tire in the water!

Amazing Power of a Tiny Stream

Just a few miles from my home outside Marietta Ohio is this amazing cliff face were a tiny stream dribbling over and through the rock face over countless millennia has formed this impressive cave like recess into the sandstone cliff face. It is an impressive feature but almost impossible to photograph without stitching several photos together. This is a four photo panorama.

EASTERN SCREECH-OWL Megascops asio in the Woods just north of Marietta, Ohio. Photo by Peter Wendelken.

A Red Phase EASTERN SCREECH-OWL Megascops asio, or Otus asio, is in its day roost in an old maple tree in the woods of the north slope of The Wendelken Nature Preserve just north of Marietta in southeastern Ohio. This maple tree was particularly interesting in having two holes in the trunk, one directly above the other. This Eastern Screech-Owl was a regular sight in this day roost situated on the north side of the trunk.

The Eastern Screech-Owl belongs to the family Strigidae and it is found in North America from Canada south to northeastern Mexico. It was until recently placed in the genus Otus and the scientific name prior to the change was Otus asio.

Stream valley Winter Landsacapes

This photo series is in a small stream gorge valley not far from my home. Because this little stream is above the surrounding river valley, water in flows down to the Ohio River about 5 miles away and over the thousands of years that it has done this it has carved a deep valley / gorge through the underlying Sandstone. At the head of the stream is a cliff face with large sandstone blocks and cliff faces exposed as you go down stream. It is also the site of a grindstone quarry which operated here until it went bankrupt in 1928. When the Quarry went under they left a large mound of partially finished grindstones in a big pile. Over time all of this has been covered in Forrest. This first set is of the pathway leading down into the valley and a couple panoramas of some of the sandstone blocks and cliffs. My next set will have photos of the quarry and the cliff face.

The Wendelken Family Nature Preserve was a 4 acre hilltop paradise within the city limits of Marietta in southeastern Ohio, obtained in 1937 and nurtured through 2009. This is a view looking south from the north border across the meadow toward the driveway in May. A very large Neon Pink Azalea is in the foreground. Behind it a very large Rhododendron. Spruce trees are on the left, a maple in the background and a chestnut on the right.

SPRING SONG. PRAIRIE WARBLER Male Setophaga discolor in Washington County, Ohio. Warbler Photo by Peter Wendelken.

PRAIRIE WARBLER male Setophaga discolor. A male Prairie Warbler is singing in a small tree in an old overgrown meadow on the bright sunny morning of May 10, 2008. The meadow was once part of the active farm of Wally Cisler. We always referred to this area as Cisler's Field and it is located right across the road from our former property, The Wendelken Nature Preserve (shown in other photos in my Photostream), in Washington County north of Marietta in southeastern Ohio.

Until recently, the scientific name Dendroica discolor was applied to the Prairie Warbler. The Prairie Warbler belongs to the family Parulidae and is a migratory New World warbler species.

Un macho de la Reinita Galana Setophaga discolor está cantando en un pastizal viejo al norte de Marietta, en el Condado de Washington en el suroriente del estado de Ohio el 10 de mayo de 2008.

Developing Fall Colors

A 22 Oct view of some developing Autumn colors at a walking trail adjacent to my favorite summer frog pond. The frogs and dragonflies that I enjoy photographing so much in summer are gone for another year but there is some nice autumn Colors developing in the trees along the path and around the pond.
