The Tiffin River was pretty water but ugh it was named in honor of the first governor of Ohio. by Tim Kiser

The Tiffin River was pretty water but ugh it was named in honor of the first governor of Ohio.

The river ought to be renamed in honor of something or someone more relevant to the river's environmental and cultural context than Governor Edward Tiffin, but I don't see anybody making it a priority to build a popular movement to rename it.

-----------------------

In German Township in Fulton County, Ohio, on November 2nd, 2024, was the Tiffin River as viewed from the north side of a bridge on the Wabash Cannonball Trail, concurrently a segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail, between U.S. Route 20A and Ohio State Route 66. A bridge on U.S. Route 20A is visible in the distance.

The Tiffin River flows to the Maumee River, which flows to Lake Erie, and so on over Niagara Falls &c &c.

Based on satellite imagery and pages 48-49 of this report from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, I suspect that this segment of the river was relocated to bypass a meander in the late 19th or early 20th century.

The Tiffin River was getting kinda sloppy-lookin this November 2nd. by Tim Kiser

© Tim Kiser, all rights reserved.

The Tiffin River was getting kinda sloppy-lookin this November 2nd.

Nah I am just kidding, it had been kinda sloppy-lookin since long before November 2nd.

Don't many of us humans find the Tiffin River's soft mudbars uninviting?

According to this report from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, "the Tiffin River mainstem [was historically] subject to significant channel and riparian area modification. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the mainstem and many of the tributaries were systematically modified. Channel modifications may have included removal of natural meanders, relocation of the active channel, dredging activities, and removal of riparian vegetation."

Based on satellite imagery, I suspect that this segment of the river was relocated to bypass a meander.

The famous Congaree River is seen here finishing up its tasks at the Fall Line. by Tim Kiser

The famous Congaree River is seen here finishing up its tasks at the Fall Line.

This is a view downstream. We can see, in the picture, that there are some riffles coming up, but we know that the biggest rapids are behind it. Ah the Congaree.

This is a short distance downstream of the confluence of the Broad River and the Saluda River, which converge to form the Congaree River. We can see that the muddier water of the Broad River (left) and the clearer water of the Saluda River (right) are not yet fully intermingled. This is wonderful fun to see.

BUT!, to be able to look at this I had to stand on an awful highway roadside like a dirty and desperate opossum or deer, because Ohio hasn't done a good job of providing suitable tourism infrastructure at sites such as these that people like me actually want to see, with our tourist dollars.
