Skala Eresou is the birthplace of poet Sappho, and as a result, has become a pilgrimage destination and utopia for lesbian women from worldwide. Sappho's poetry, much of which had strong emotions for other women, led to the words "lesbian" and "Sapphic" being used to describe gay women. My visit to Lesbos and Skala Eresou is itself a pilgrimage, in memory of my late wife Casey.
