In West Milwaukee was an apartment building from midcentury modern times, 1961.

In evening sun in 2021, we see corrugated sheet metal in terracotta-colored paint, sectioned off by numerous "picture frames" in cardboard-colored paint, and a pattern of protruding "stair steps" without risers: A sixty-year-old building!

Tan-brickèd West Virginia '61 apts.

According to the random everyday people who write Wikipedia, this kind of roof is known in the US as a "Dutch gable" roof, and in the UK as a "gablet roof." When I search Google Images for either of those terms I get pictures of roofs that look like this.

The Getty Research Institute's Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) contradicts that: It calls this a gable-on-hip roof, whereas "Dutch gables" are curved and gablets are usually not roof gables. When I search Google Images for "gable-on-hip roof" I also get pictures of roofs that look like this.

I am snooty so I have chosen to use the AAT term when I converse with my peers about these kinds of roofs.

Guess the year of this apartment highrise. Answer, it's 1961!

I see where supposedly it's 63.4 metres high and 60.26 metres wide. I think it was literally stupid of the 1961 architects not to make it a perfect square, once it became clear that they were gonna get that close. Right?
