These well-fed lionesses briefly inspected a warthog skull before deciding it was not worth their attention and leaving it to some waiting hyenas to squabble over.

Not a pleasant image to look at, I know. I show it to emphasize the reality of life and death on the African plains. These two lionesses, and a third out of shot, hunted and killed an adult buffalo. We watched the whole harrowing event, which took about 35 minutes, from start to finish. Hard to witness, but a reminder of the nature of Africa’s apex predator – as well as being the most intelligent of big cats, sociable, brave, caring, playful and affectionate with one another, they are also ferocious killers.
