Herman the Ermine

The ermine, also known as the short-tailed weasel or stoat, is a charming and intriguing creature that showcases Alaska's extraordinary wildlife. Despite its small size, weighing just under half a pound, this remarkable predator proves that great power can come in small packages. With its impressive hunting skills, the ermine can take down prey, such as rabbits, that can be twice its weight. This extraordinary adaptability and prowess make the ermine a true standout in Alaska's rich ecosystems. We've had the pleasure of observing this particular ermine darting back and forth through our yard for days. It's a swift creature, and today, it stopped in front of our garage just as I stepped out for my afternoon walk. I was prepared for it to flee, but I took a chance and managed to snap a quick photo. It's a good thing I did, as it didn't stay long before moving on.

Grizzly at the Bird Feeder by Snowshoe Photography - Alaska

Grizzly at the Bird Feeder

After exploring our yard and house, peering into windows, and walking onto our back porch, the grizzly bear from two nights ago settled in for a snack of bird seed. Thankfully, it hasn't returned since that night. It was merely passing through in search of food, as bears often do. In light of this, we made the responsible choice to remove all bird feeders and store them away. While this may have momentarily puzzled the birds, they'll adapt and find food elsewhere. We'll gladly set the feeders back up when winter arrives, ensuring our feathered friends have the nourishment they need once the bears are fast asleep. By taking these precautions, we're not only protecting our wildlife but also creating a safer environment for all.

A Grizzly Visit by Snowshoe Photography - Alaska

A Grizzly Visit

Imagine getting ready for bed, only to glance out your window and catch sight of a magnificent bear strolling across your front yard. In that instant, I knew sleep would have to wait. Heart racing with excitement, I grabbed my camera and prepared to capture the unforgettable moment.

What followed was a mesmerizing display as the grizzly tore apart two bird feeders, desperately trying to reach the seeds inside. I should have taken them down sooner. For nearly two hours, this captivating creature entertained us by climbing trees, circling our house, and peering inside with its massive paws pressed against the glass, drool cascading down like a waterfall.

At one point, it settled in a tree about eight feet off the ground, surveying its surroundings with an air of dominance. Finally, as night fell, it retreated into the nearby forest, but not without leaving us on high alert. Encountering a grizzly is not something to take lightly; it's a powerful reminder of the wild beauty that exists just beyond our doorstep.

Weasel Curiosity

Weasels are fascinatingly curious creatures that often explore their surroundings, drawn in by intriguing sounds or scents. While they don't usually make their way into homes, their innate curiosity can occasionally lead them indoors. Although we've never had the opportunity to welcome one inside, we've been delighted to watch these little critters in our rain gutters. Just the other day, I captured this stunning photo of a weasel perched on top of our woodshed, showcasing its playful nature. If you ever encounter one, take a moment to appreciate their charm.

Posing Porcupine by Snowshoe Photography - Alaska

Posing Porcupine

The porcupine is a remarkable and resilient mammal, measuring 25 to 31 inches in length. Its stout, short-legged body demonstrates impressive adaptability, featuring a coat of hair with lighter-tipped guard hairs that present beautiful hues of yellow or white. The sparse belly hair varies from black to brown, showcasing its diversity.

To withstand harsh winters, the porcupine has a thick layer of body fat and protective hair for warmth. Its muscular tail serves dual purposes: helping with climbing and acting as a defense mechanism, covered in quills on the upper surface and bristle-like hairs on the underside. This distinctive quilled coat makes the porcupine a unique representative among North American mammals, symbolizing nature's ingenuity and resilience.
