They actually took this trip back and forth several times before my sister and I was born. Using all local roads - including Route 66 - it would take them several weeks to make it across. The Federal Interstate Highway system wasn't built yet.
I find it hard to believe that this Chieftan really made it all the way there with its 6 volt electrical system, inline six cylinder engine, drum brakes, bias-ply tires, no power windows, no power brakes and no air conditioning. But it did.
Decades later, my parents would still occasionally reminisce about these trips taken clear across the country back in their youth. They finally got rid of the car in 1970 when it was on its last legs. Tears were shed that day.
