Numbat, Myrmecobius fasciatus

My January trip to Australia was a whirlwind of a week covering very many kilometres in southern Western Australia, searching mostly for birds and mammals with Matt Summerville, Alex Hitchin and Mark Green. Of everything that we saw, numbats were the highlight for me. As many will know, this fascinating termite-eating marsupial is critically endangered as a result of habitat clearance across nearly all of its range, leaving approximately 1000 remaining individuals in relatively small isolated blocks of well-managed woodland in Western Australia. The animal in this photo is one of three seen after searching for some hours

Sugar Glider- rather out of place in the reptilarium

This poor Sugar Glider looks woefully out of place in the reptilarium in the Malacca/ Melaka zoo. Maybe this poor animal needed the cool, dark environment of the reptile house, but I was left wondering if instinct scared the animal with the deadly reptiles around. At any rate, the Sugar Glider is meant to fly- ok, glide- between trees, so how would it feel confined to a tiny box in a zoo? The Sugar Glider is a small, omnivorous, arboreal, and nocturnal gliding possum. The common name refers to its predilection for sugary foods such as sap and nectar and its ability to glide through the air, much like a Flying Squirrel. Notes about the Malacca/ Melaka zoo appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Malacca/ Melaka, Malaysia, Sept. 2023) PS: Pardon the reflection of my iPhone on the glass- the lighting was very low inside the reptilarium, and with this animal stuck into a remote corner of his tiny glass case, this was the best view I could get.

Signage about the Sugar Glider you saw earlier in this album (see previous picture). The Sugar Glider is a small, omnivorous, arboreal, and nocturnal gliding possum. The sign is fairly self explanatory if viewed in full screen or expanded mode, so I will save you further commentary. Notes about the Malacca/ Melaka zoo appeared earlier in this album.
