My January trip to Australia was a whirlwind of a week covering very many kilometres in southern Western Australia, searching mostly for birds and mammals with Matt Summerville, Alex Hitchin and Mark Green. Of everything that we saw, numbats were the highlight for me. As many will know, this fascinating termite-eating marsupial is critically endangered as a result of habitat clearance across nearly all of its range, leaving approximately 1000 remaining individuals in relatively small isolated blocks of well-managed woodland in Western Australia.
