- On 3 June 1944, the ships left Belfast Lough for Utah and Omaha beaches in Normandy France ' Bangor's north pier was renamed in 2005 by Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of General Dwight D Eisenhower, in commemoration of the town's crucial role in WW2. It was from this pier that the future US President sent off hundreds of Allied ships that had gathered in Bangor Bay for the D-Day Liberation of Europe - 4 -
- At the time The Tonic Cinema was the largest Cinema in Ireland with 2,001 seats, built in 1936 in Bangor County Down, Northern Ireland and 56 years later was demolished in 1992 following a fire. The old Compton Theatre Organ, formerly in the Tonic Cinema, was in the care of Bangor Academy School but following the demolition of the school, the organ was moved to north east of england where it is in the care of an enthusiast in Hull - 4 -
