A Would-Be Wartime Pacific

34027 Taw Valley approaches Bewdley, Severn Valley Railway.

Reumbered as 21C127 for its last few months in service before overhaul, it is carrying Southern Railways wartime black livery - something which never happened in reality. The loco wasn't completed until 1946 and is currently in its rebuilt form, again something which wasn't carried out until 1957.

The 'what if' livery is a clever way of drawing enthususiasts to the railway's events.

The Lady Approaches

2999 Lady Of Legend leaves Bewdley, Severn Valley Railway.

2999 is a 'new-build' version of one of the Saint Class of GWR locomotives. All of the original class were scrapped by 1953, long before they were likely to be preserved.

Lady Of Legend was built using the boiler and other parts from 4942 Maindy Hall. Construction took place mainly between 2009 and 2019 and the loco now runs at Didcot Railway Centre as well as visiting other heritage railways.

Visiting Mogul

78018 heads south from Bewdley station, Severn Valley Railway.

The loco was built in 1953 and ran for 13 years until 1966 when it was withdrawn and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros, Barry Island. It remained there until 1978 when it was bought for preservation. As is often the case the restoration took a decades, with the loco eventually steaming again, 50 years after withdrawal, in 2016.

It is usually based at the Great Central Railway, Loughborough.
