Woodchat Shrikes

The first woodchat shrike (Lanius senator) I met, in the small forest by the lighthouse where we live nearly three years ago. A member of our bird club found it there, and it stayed for several days.

It is a rare visitor in Norway, with one or two visits a year. It breeds in southern Europe, the Middle East and northwest Africa, and winters in tropical Africa.

One year ago I met one for the second time, in northern Greece.

The Garden Singer by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Garden Singer

I just heard the garden warbler (Sylvia borin) for the first time this year, behind the bird station where I spend the week.

They are very good at hiding, but here I got to see it while joining a bird ringing trip last year.

It is a common and widespread warbler that breeds in most of Europe and in the Palearctic to western Siberia. It winters in sub-Saharan Africa.

The preferred breeding habitat in Eurasia is open woodland with dense low cover for nesting; despite its name, gardens are rarely occupied by this small passerine bird.

A garden warbler in the hand

In August, I saw the garden warbler (Sylvia borin) for the first time. And really close as well, since I joined BirdLife Dalane on a bird ringing trip.

I had only heard them five times before, since they are often hard to spot inside the bushes.

The Tawny Owls

A tawny owl mother (Strix aluco), while ringing and releasing it and its owlets, which I have attended many springs now.

The species is commonly found in woodlands across Europe, as well as western Siberia, and has seven recognized subspecies.

Bird Yoga by Ranveig Marie Photography

Bird Yoga

Many Eurasian rock pipits (Anthus petrosus) migrate to western or southern Europe for winter, but on our island we have many throughout the year.

This is one of 12-20 individuals that we have had on a small stretch of rocks between the beaches here during winter.

I don't know if some of them are the same that breed here, or if all of them have migrated from even further north.

A beauty in the hand by Ranveig Marie Photography

A beauty in the hand

From my second and closest encounter with the beautiful common firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla), 2.5 months ago. It was a young female of the year.

An acquaintance in our local BirdLife group got it in the bird ringing net in his garden, and he was kind to call us to see it.

It was only the 3rd registered firecrest in history in our municipality.

The common firecrest breeds in most of temperate Europe including Denmark and Sweden, and northwestern Africa.

We also had a nesting couple in Norway in 2019. But here the goldcrests (fuglekonger in Norwegian) are the common ones in this family of birds.

Beauty on spikes

Until last weekend I had only seen and photographed the beautiful hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) once, two years ago.

So when a new acquaintance invited me to come and photograph the birds by his feeder, including up to seven hawfinches, I was quick to go...two days in a row last weekend 😉

I love getting to know so many nice people so often, through the bird and photography interest!
