Red Kangaroo (Osphranter rufus)_2507

Female or "blue flyer" that did not have a joey at foot nor one of any size in its pouch. This area had received recent good rains where the drought that existed would have countered any rearing of young.
Red Kangaroos are the largest species of macropod. In most areas, the species is sexually dimorphic where males have short, red-brown fur, fading to pale buff below and on the limbs, while females and are blue-grey with a brown tinge and pale grey below. Females are often given the name of "blue flyer".

Here is another kangaroo at the Healsville Wildlife Sanctuary in the Yarra Valley, north east of Melbourne in the state of Victoria.
This is a female of the 'Red Kangaroo' strain. The females remain a bluey-grey colour, unlike the males that go red with maturity (as in last 2 posts). Consequently these females have been nicknamed as Blue-Flyers.

A trip to Melbourne for a bit of R & R - headed out to the Yarra Valley to Healsville Wildlife Sanctuary. Came across a particularly handsome male Red Kangaroo - not yet fully mature, or leader of the pack - he still has some of the blue colour that females retain, but males turn the red colour that you can see developing on his side.

Blue Flyer

A Blue Flyer or female Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus). Unlike the predominantly red males the females have blue-grey fur. Amazingly female red kangaroos are usually permanently pregnant, except on the day they gives birth. They have the ability to freeze the development of an embryo until the previous joey has permanently left the pouch which occurs after about 235 days. The ability to halt development of a fertilised egg is known as diapause, and evolved in response to the extremely variable climatic cycles of the Australian outback. Paroo-Darling National Park, Outback New South Wales, Australia.
