Plato's Atlantis, Alexander McQueen, 2010
In his collection, titled 'Plato's Atlantis', Lee Alexander McQueen imagined a human body whose mutation was brought about by the necessary adaptation to global warming. The textile's print, comprising an array of vibrantly coloured reptile skins, brings to mind the work of ceramicist Bernard Palissy (1510-1589) and his followers. The creation of an artificial composition made from existing elements from the natural world is another point of overlap. McQueen, a regular visitor to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, was most certainly familiar with the Palissy aesthetic.

Prêt-à-Porter, Matthieu Blay - Bottega Veneta, 2023-2024
Here, Matthieu Blazy transforms the wearer into a hybrid animal-part-woman, part-fish. This interest for the marine world recalls the work of Bernard Palissy (1510-1589) and his followers, whose varnished terracotta objects were full of utterly lifelike aquatic animals, amphibians, reptiles and seashells. Just as Palissy created the illusion of living creatures, Blazy nurtures the impression of a modified body by sculpting it with knit scales and short fringes whose move- ments replicate the rippling of the sea.
