Palácio Foz

July 10, 2023 - Palácio Foz at Praça dos Restauradores 13, 1250-187 Lisboa, Portugal

"The Palacio Foz is hard to miss. With its bright pink facade and notable history, it’s a regular feature on walking tours of Lisbon. Though the exterior is nice, it’s the extravagant interior that’s really special.

Built in 1777, the palace was originally the home of the Count of Castelo Melhor. But it was the Marquis of Foz, who bought the palace in 1889, who turned the interior into the sumptuous masterpiece it is today.

Pompous gilded decorations, marble pillars, wrought iron balconies, and painted ceilings fill the French and Italian-inspired interior. A Louis XIV-style grand staircase takes visitors to a gallery with several famous paintings, and the dining room features more paintings and three crystal chandeliers from Venice. There is even another Paintings Room, with even more famous works. Perhaps most impressive of all, however, is the Grand Hall, or Hall of Mirrors, inspired by the Palace of Versailles.

In the basement of the palace is a Neo Gothic abbey, used as a restaurant in the early 1900s. Other parts of the palace are now the National Sports Museum, a Music Museum, and the Lisbon tourist office. Though the interior is not generally open to the public, monthly guided tours are available. Additionally, the palace hosts free concerts inside the Hall of Mirrors every Monday night, so get in line early." Previous description: accidentallywesanderson.com/places/palacio-foz/

Fifth Avenue Building

179-foot, 16-story Renaissance-revival office building completed in 1909. Designed by Maynicke & Franke, it was known as the Fifth Avenue Building when it opened. The limestone facades are characterized by a base articulated with double-height pilasters, a shaft section pierced by paired window openings, and a top organized within a continuous arcade. It replaced the legendary Fifth Avenue Hotel and Madison Square Theater. The lower level was occupied in the 1920's by United Cigar Co., Hanan Shoes, and George Benjamin Tailoring.

195 Three dogs

Three dogs walked side by side on a leash, as if without interest in their surroundings. At a certain point, everyone rushed to the side, perhaps to clear the way for me and thus take the woman with them, who was watching me a little incredulously.

ELMFIELD PARK opened in 1922 and is situated between Chequer Road, Roman Road and South Parade. Elmfield House is an early 19th Century Grade II Listed building and sits at the north end of the park. overlooking the historic rose garden in full bloom. In 1987 we used the park as the backdrop for our wedding photos before a reception meal at the nearby Regent Hotel.

Doncaster Leisure Centre, known as THE DOME, was officially opened in November 1989 by Diana, Princess of Wales. Designed by architect Faulkner Brown, construction of The Dome started three years earlier in November 1986. On completion, the cost of the build was £26 million. In October 2023 The Dome was designated a Grade II Listed Building.

DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION viewed from the top of the multi story car park looking south. The image would be dated around the second half of 1987, the first stantions, that will soon support the overhead wires for the electrified ECML, The British Railways 'Plant' Locomotive works occupies most of the background and the old cattle dock are being used as a car park to the left. Just out of sight to the left was BR offices 'Gresley House' and the Mainline/Outlook Nightclub, a place I spent a lot of time at, both were demolished to make way for the new Transport Interchange in 2004.

Doncaster railway station was built in 1949 but was rebuilt in 1938, most of which is still the mainstay of the present station with just a few modifications and alterations. 2004 saw the most modernistaion to incorporate it into the new Transport Interchange. In 2015 work started on building the new platform 0 on the site of the old cattle dock. The Station Booking Hall was given Grade II Listed status in April 1988.

A Centre of excellence for Christian Mission, Training and Conferences.

Bawtry Hall is a Grade II* Listed building, built in 1785 for Pemberton Milnes, a wool merchant from Wakefield. Built in red brick, in Flemish bond style. Pilot, Major George Peake bought the property in 1905 and an extension added shortly afterwards. Bawtry Hall fell into the hands of the RAF during the Second World War becoming their command centre. The Hall remained with the Royal Air Force until 1984 during which time it was No.1 Group Strike Command Headquarters. The Welbeck Estate Group bought the Hall in 1987 and for the next 24 years it was a Centre of excellence for Christian Mission, Training and Conferences, run by Action Partners Corporation. Bawtry Hall suffered neglect from around four years before being bought and renovated in 2017 into what is now a luxurious wedding venue.

The Prudential Assurance Company Limited building stands at the junction between Hall Gate and Silver Street as viewed from the High Street. Hall Gate was once part of the Great North Road, later becoming the A1 road. When the A1(M) was constructed, which by-passed Doncaster it reverted back to plain old Hall Gate, an extension of Doncaster's High Street and no longer a main road through the town centre.
