Also known as the Burgundy Snail or 'escargot', this is the snail of French cuisine.
They exist throughout much of Europe with an introduced population occurring on chalk soils in the south and west of England. In Britain they are protected by law, making it illegal to kill, injure, collect or sell them.
This image was taken in a Cotswold woodland a few years ago.
