Manchester wasn't that busy in 1963. Apart from a BOAC Britannia, this was probably the highlight of the day!
Named: "High Dale".
This aircraft was delivered to the USAAF United States Army Air Forces serialled 42-32905 in Feb-43. It was transferred to the UK Royal Air Force as FD814 the following month.
It was sold to Suidair International, South Africa as ZS-BJZ in Nov-46. it was re-registered XY-ACP, Burma (now Myanmar) in Apr-50. The aircraft was sold to Field Aircraft Services, UK as G-AOFZ in Nov-55 and sold to Hunting Clan (African) Airways as VP-YON in Jul-56.
It returned to the UK as G-AOFZ in Feb-60 when it was sold to Derby Airways. Derby Airways was renamed British Midland Airways in Oct-64.
The aircraft was sold to Gulf Aviation, later Gulf Air, in Apr-66, still as G-AOFZ. It was written off at Muscat - Azaiba Airfield, Oman on 17-Aug-66, shortly after take-off the aircraft lost height and crashed into trees about 550 yards from the end of the runway.
Thanks to RZ Jets and several other sources for the history.

Built in early 1942 as a civil DC-3, this aircraft was delivered to the USAAF United States Army Air Forces as a C-47-DL serialled 41-7828 in Apr-42. At the end of WW2 it was sold to National Air Cargo (USA) as NC90626 in Mar-46.
In Jun-47 it was transferred to Pacific National Air Express. The aircraft was with them until it was sold to Flugfelag Akureyrar (Iceland) as TF-ISD in May-54. It was wet-leased to Braathens S.A.F.E. (Norway) in Mar-57 and they bought it in Jun-57 when it was re-registered LN-SUK.
The aircraft was sold to Riis Flyreden (Norway) in Sep-62 and leased back to Braathens until Mar-63 when it was re-registered LN-RTA and leased to Transair Sweden. They only had it for a few weeks before it was returned to Riis Flyreden in Apr-63.
In May-63 the aircraft was leased to Martins Air Charter (Netherlands) and operated for Fairline Rotterdam. It returned to Riis Flyreden in Sep-63 and was was leased to Loadair AB (Sweden) later the same month, returning to Riis Flyreden in Apr-64.
At the end of Apr-64 it was leased to Wideroes Flyveselskap (Norway). It appears to have been 'grounded' at Oslo-Fornebu at the end of Jun-65. The aircraft was used by the Oslo Airport Fire Service for practice and was broken up at Oslo-Fornebu in 1976.
My thanks to rzjets.net for the majority of the history.
I first photographed this Dak in active service when it arrived at Fairford in 1985. Unfortunately it was full dull weather. On arrival at Practica for 100th anniversary Air Show the first thing I noticed was this wonderful Dak which has been superbly restored to what could be mistaken for full flying service. Delivered to the USAAF in 1942 41-7449, it joined the Italian Air Force in 1960 after a period with Alitalia. With the addition of electronic equipment for a electronics role with 14 Stormo, 8 Gruppo. Eventually retired in June 1986.
