The legs are covered with spiky hairs and fulfill a variety of functions, including perching, catching and holding onto prey, and cleaning its mouth and eyes (thanks Google).

Calopteryx jewelwing

I love the jewelwing damselflies. With their beautiful, iridescent sheen and colourful wings.

I saw this one within a densely vegetative area with shade, so the colours are muted. There was a stream close by.

But still so lovely to see, flitting from leaf to leaf.

Around 5 cm body length.

Banded Demoiselle / gebänderte Prachtlibelle

This male banded demoiselle must have hatched shortly before I found it. His colors are not yet fully evolved, only a faint shimmer of blue and green are visible. Normally these dragonflies are brilliant dark blue and green

Female banded demoiselle resting in the sun.
I didn't take this photo with a macro lens. I used the Canon RF 100-500 mm lens at 500 mm (!) at the minimum distance of only 1,2 m / 4 ft. - it's such an amazing lens
