Edward Valentine Carey , an Englishman , drained swamps and built dykes to open up wasteland on an island in the state of Selangor , Malaysia . Rubber was introduced to Carey Island in 1905 and a permanent work force was established in 1907.
Hatter's Castle was once the residence of a later manager ( not Mr Carey ) and this bungalow was built more than a hundred years ago . This Scotsman gave it its name after a surge of inspiration from a novel which he read .
There are several more bungalows like this one on the island .
