From the ramparts of Castelnou Castle, the vistas unfold in every direction—rolling hills, distant Pyrenean ridges, and a shimmering line of sea on the horizon. These are landscapes once watched by sentries and now simply admired by travellers with cameras and curiosity. The terrain whispers its ancient stories… if you listen carefully.
Perched in the foothills of the Aspres, Castelnou Castle dates back to the 10th century and was once the seat of the powerful Viscounts of Vallespir. Its strategic position offered commanding views over the Roussillon plain, making it both a defensive stronghold and a symbol of feudal authority. Though damaged and restored over the centuries, the castle still echoes its medieval past—watchtowers, crenellated walls, and fortified gates standing as silent witnesses to centuries of regional conflict, Catalan heritage, and eventual decline under the French crown.
