“How Ronald Reagan discovered V-8” in a 1952 newspaper ad, the year the film “Hong Kong” was released.

“Jeff Williams (Ronald Reagan) is an American army veteran living in China who is on the run from the Red Army as the country falls to communism. Along the way, he encounters a Chinese orphan named Wei Lin (Danny Chang) who is carrying an ancient and valuable golden idol. Adventure ensues as Williams must outwit both the communists and Chinese gangsters while scheming to cash in on the idol himself. But he is restrained by his love for a good woman (Rhonda Fleming).” – Wikipedia

[Note: This film scores a dismal 14% on the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.]

Some of Reagan’s best films are:

•Kings Row (1942) – A gripping drama where Reagan delivers one of his most memorable performances.

•Knute Rockne, All American (1940) – Famous for Reagan’s portrayal of football legend George Gipp, which gave rise to the iconic phrase, “Win one for the Gipper.”

•Hellcats of the Navy (1957)– A WWII submarine drama, notable for being the only film in which Reagan starred alongside his future wife, Nancy Davis.

•Santa Fe Trail (1940)– A Western adventure featuring Reagan alongside Errol Flynn.

•This Is the Army (1943)– A wartime musical comedy that boosted troop morale during World War II.

"The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" was a beloved American sitcom that aired from 1952 to 1966, making it one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms in U.S. television history. The show starred the real-life Nelson family: Ozzie Nelson, Harriet Nelson, and their sons, David and Ricky. It originally began as a radio show before transitioning to television, where it enjoyed immense popularity. The wholesome portrayal of family life, combined with a touch of humor, made it a cornerstone of classic television.

Ricky Nelson, the youngest son, became a teen idol during the show's run. He launched a successful music career, with hits like "Teenage Idol," "Hello Mary Lou," and "Travelin' Man." His performances on the show often showcased his musical talent, further boosting his popularity.

Ricky Nelson had a long, successful career as a recording artist and, tragically, died in the crash-landing of his band's DC-3 on December 31, 1985. He was 45.

Wes Unseld and his P.R.O. telephoto

For you fans of 1970s basketball, I gather that Wes Unseld was quite a star of the time. And with Ritz Camera having originated with stores in Baltimore and Washington, DC, I'm sure having him as a customer was a thrill (leading to this very atypical Ritz ad).

But it's more notable as further evidence that Ritz was definitely the most prominent, or perhaps the exclusive, distributor of P.R.O. (later P•R•O) lenses and accessories. The name is a backronym for "Photographic Research Organization." Later this evolved to Promaster, who still exist, outliving the bankruptcy of the Ritz mega-chain.

Bob Hope in a 1948 magazine ad for Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer

For those too young to remember, Bob Hope was an American entertainer and comic actor known for his rapid-fire delivery of jokes and one-liners. Between 1941 and 1991, he made 57 tours for the USO, entertaining military personnel in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War.

The Port of San Diego pays tribute to the comedian with a small park near the USS Midway, overlooking the harbor. Called "A National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military," the park consists of outdoor bronze statues depicting armed forces personnel listening to Hope deliver jokes and one-liners.

Rita Hayworth by Phil Beard

Rita Hayworth

Rita Hayworth was a serial endorser - everything from cosmetics to card tables, from cola to candy, from clocks to cigarettes, from soap to margarine, she was never known to say no. Celebrity endorsement peaked in the 1940s, the decade of Hayworth’s dominance as a screen idol and she made the very most of it. To be fair she was far from the worst offender - Lucille Ball and Bob Hope were even more ubiquitous. And, unlike others, she never endorsed more than one brand of cigarettes. Gilda was a goldmine for Rita Hayworth. In this ad she lends her services to Max Factor via a movie montage that includes her co-star, Glenn Ford. 1946

This is the only example with Rita present - the year is 1947 and the movie tie-in is Down to Earth, a musical comedy of modest reputation.
